Dear all,

Further to a short meeting we had Tuesday afternoon with the WSIS ES, which
mainly focused on requests for parallel events, we would like to point out
some specific issues in this regard.

. During this meeting, the question of deadline to advise the Joint
Committee on initiatives to merge requests was raised. Officially, the
deadline is still on 15 July 2005. However, the Executive Secretariat of
WSIS has taken contact with their Tunisian counterparts and we have good
hopes that there would be an announcement tomorrow that the Joint Committee
will agree to extend the deadline by one week or 10 days, as it is in the
interest of all concerned. We will keep you informed about this.

. The CSB Secretariat compiled a list of contact persons for each parallel
event, in order to help Civil Society combine activities of a similar
thematic nature. Please find the attached document. This list was drawn up
from existing data we had at our disposal, so that it is still incomplete.
If you would like to contact an entity whose contact data is not indicated
on our list, you can contact either the WSIS ES or Tunisia (contact e-mail:
smsi-evenementsparalleles@mincom.tn or wsis-parallelevents@mincom.tn ). They
will provide you asap with the contact address.

Due to the scarcity of available space, the WSIS ES encourages the merging
of parallel events on a voluntary basis, as a more practical and inclusive
way to reduce the total amount of requests. The WSIS ES announced us that
the Joint Committee would try to reach a good balance in the planning of
side events between all the actors involved in the WSIS process. Obviously,
side events resulting in a merging of previous requests, as well as events
organised by a group of entities, would probably be given a higher
consideration in case of arbitration for the establishment of the definitive
list and timetable of parallel events. The final decision on the definitive
list remains with the Joint Committee. Any information about merging should
be sent to to smsi-evenementsparalleles@mincom.tn or
wsis-parallelevents@mincom.tn .

. On the question of interpretation facilities, the WSIS ES notified us that
we have to look by ourselves to get interpreters (this is actually the
common practice within most of the UN conferences and meetings for parallel
events). However, we were also told that only a few larger rooms (probaly
only 2-3) would be equipped with interpretation booths and technical
facilities. This is due to the fact that hiring of interpretation booths and
equipment is very costly and even in Geneva, only 2 or 3 larger rooms had
been equipped with interpretation booths and equipment.

Best regards,

Philippe Dam
