The World-wide Day of the Illiteracy, the 8 of September, remembers to
us that million people in the world do not know to read or to write
correctly.

In Switzerland, 500,000 people would be in such condition

In the planet they are 860 million people - that is, a fifth
part of the world-wide population -, those that do not know to read or
to write correctly.

In Switzerland also east phenomenon, because almost average million
women and men exists as soon as they know to read and to write. It is
denominated to them illiterate functional or illiterate.

With occasion of the World-wide Day of the Alphabetization one will
distribute in the country about 100,000 pamphlets in three of the four
national languages. The objective is to sensitize to the public
opinion about this problem.

In opinion of Elisabeth Derisiotis, president of the association "To
read and to write" in the German Switzerland of speech, will also use
a little as "soup of letters" to symbolize the intention of the
subject.

She can briefly describe the kind of problems that faces illiterate a
functional one?

Elisabeth Derisiotis: Are confronted people to innumerable problems in
the daily life. To fill a simple form, to use some automatic
dispenser, to read the labels in the supermarkets constitutes for them
a problem. To this additional obstacles are added such as the
incapacity to help to the children in the scholastic duties, etc.

According to recent studies, in Switzerland, one of each six people
would undergo of low level of reading and writing; even though
officially she is not enrolled like illiterate. It is thus?

E.D.: It is not possible to be so affirmative. Illiterate true the
migratory flows have traido to Switzerland. Our association does not
take care truely of those cases, because personas.\r\n  are specific
programs for those \r\nAnte the illiteracy where to look for the
people in charge? \r\n
\r\nE.D.: One is a problem of the society that has problablemente not
been identified opportunely and that does not stop to take terrain.
The period of economic dilatoriness that we crossed is a factor
agravante.\r\n

The affected people have impressive histories. Often they were
sent from a school to another one. A majority of them is people who in
the school happened with slips or that progressively forgot all the
learned one in aulas.\r\n

I requested that our establishments are more are integrated in
the formation of the educators, so that these know the problem better
the illiteracy. But this demand was not listened to. Perhaps \r\n
\r\n  the political world became aware little from this phenomenon?
\r\n
\r\nE.D.: The illiteracy is a recognized reality, but nobody worries
truely about her. One has become few things. It is not possible to
fight this phenomenon without equipping with true means. It the same
happens for the prevention or the sensibilización. He would be
opportune that the political world gives the average ones us for
intervenir.\r\n

The fight against the illiteracy is an ungrateful combat of
every moment, a work that very is not recognized and that, therefore,
is not valued as it deserves. I have there why there are no advances.
\r\n  \r\n How arrives at its customer the association "To read and to
write"? \r\n
\r\nE.D.: That is our great problem. Before the great number of
potential clients, as soon as we arrived at a very small part with
modest campaigns from sensibilización, information, and diffusion by
the radio or the television of testimonies of people concernidas.\r\n

In Germanic Switzerland, the association as opposed to
reunites a thousand of people about 800 in Switzerland Romande
(francófona) and to a smaller number in the Tesino.

Often those people do not come by themselves, but because their
surroundings send us. We would have to be present in the field of the
information and sensibilización,\r\n", 1 ]);//--

factor.

E.D.: That is our great problem. Before the great number of potential

campaigns from sensibilización, information, and diffusion by the
radio or the television of testimonies of concerned people.

In Germanic Switzerland, the association as opposed to reunites a

to a smaller number in the Tesino.

Often those people do not come by themselves, but because their
surroundings send us. We would have to be present in the field of the
information and sensibilización.\r\n  \r\n recruit to the illiterate
people mainly in the favored layers less of the society? \r\n
\r\nE.D.: They come mainly from the average ones little educated, but
not solely. There are also people who, in the course of their lives,
lost the capacity of reading or writing.

Although the women more are affected than the men, do not mean that
for that reason more they are represented in our courses. We have a
good propotion between women and men... what means that at the moment
we did not arrive so well at the women as to hombres.\r\n \r\n
\r\n Desde for twenty years are courses to teach to the adults to read
and to write. What has changed since then? \r\n
\r\nE.D.: We would have to speak of stagnation, because the numbers
continue being more or less the same ones. Perhaps we are a little
more conscious the problem. The adults have the tendency to elude the
subject and to somewhere relegate it of his mentes.\r\n

The study IS ABOVE has generated a dynamism to the inverse
one. Revealing the lingüísticas deficiencies of the children and the
young people it has caused a conscience taking and has mobilized to
the opinion around this problem. We could take advantage of this
impulso.\r\n \r\n  \r\n  the multiplication studies on the subject is,
to jucio his, a positive factor? \r\n
\r\nE.D.: If we were satisfied to making studies and to wait for years
for the publication of results that come to confirm the saying by
previous studies, I only can react with an increasing impatience. \r\n
Now is due to act: the political world and the economy must be located
before their responsibilities. We already have sufficient studies and
I would wish that the money is used in other things. \r\n  \r\n: The
concerned people are victims of a shame feeling and tend to dismular
the problem. How can be broken that psychological taboo? \r\n
\r\nE.D.: Approaching the problem of direct way. When the affected
people pronounce themselves, the problem of way practical is not due
to walk with roundups, but to face and to pay attention objetivos,", 1
